Precautionary health measures for Dinsdale residents

Posted On: Tuesday, 31 January 2006

Low levels of indicator organisms have been identified in the Dinsdale water supply zone. The finding was made as a part of routine monitoring. As a precautionary measure residents in the Dinsdale area are advised [today 28 January 2006] to boil water for consumption before use.

Water and waste services manager Leroy Leach says the source area of the problem has been isolated from the water supply network for further testing and cleansing.

"As a precaution to ensure residents health we are immediately advising Dinsdale residents by letter drop within the possible affected area (approximately 1500 homes) to boil water for consumption until further notice."

The area is bounded by Dinsdale Roundabout - Whatawhata and Dinsdale roads to Whatawhata Road and Leong Ave to Leong Ave and Bremworth Ave to Bremworth and Piako Ave to Gibson Street and Tukaramea Road to Gibson Street and Amanda Ave to end of Amanda Ave to all of Melva Street to Whatawhata Road intersection to Jefferson Ave and Grandview Heights to Grandview Heights and Western Heights Drive to Newcastle Road and Blomfield Road to Newcastle and Ellicott Road to Ellicott and Maple Ave to Aberdeen and Goodall streets to Dinsdale Roundabout - Whatawhata and Dinsdale roads.

"We've advised the Waikato Health Board's medical officer of health who is monitoring the situation. Local health professionals have also been advised and are aware to look out for potential symptoms."

Ordinary domestic water filters do not eliminate disease-causing micro-organisms and - it is advisable to boil the water before drinking or using it. Boiling water for one minute kills all water-borne disease-causing micro-organisms.

While the notice to boil water is in effect, changes should also be made in the ordinary use and consumption of tapwater for food preparation, personal hygiene and domestic use.

"As soon as we are certain the water supply complies with the prescribed standards we will again let affected residents know by letter drop that the notice to boil water is lifted and that they can consume water again normally."
