Waikato Museum hosts play to mark Womens Day

A play about women written and performed by women, for women, with proceeds to go to Women’s Refuge will be held at Waikato Museum to mark International Women’s Day.

‘My Name is Ruhi’ will be performed in the Waikato Museum Lecture Theatre at 6.30pm on Monday, 8 March and Tuesday, 9 March.

The one-woman play tells the story of a 92 year old New Zealand woman who loses her name, her children and control of her life when she runs away with an Irish immigrant. It is written by New Zealand playwright Donna Banicevich Gera, directed by Toni Regan of Red Boots Productions, and stars actor Noa Campbell.

Entry to My Name is Ruhi is by gold coin donation, with all proceeds going to Women’s Refuge.

Waikato Museum director Kate Vusoniwailala said the play is a fitting way for the local community to be able to mark International Women’s Day.

“Women’s Day centres on women’s rights and recognises and celebrates the important roles that women play in society. What better way to do that here in Hamilton than by showcasing a piece of theatre that is all about women – from the playwright, to the story line, to the director, to the actor, to the worthy cause that will benefit from the proceeds,” she said.
