Hamilton is in the midst of high growth as it emerges as a sophisticated metropolitan city. The city is young, passionate, ambitious and is carving a distinctive and vibrant future for itself. At the forefront of science, industry, education, and commerce, its energy is reflected in its people, its 24 hour culture, iconic events, and creativity. Hamilton is real, honest, relaxed, and down to earth, a rich blend of history, many cultures, and endless opportunity.
With that comes the need to plan and implement responsive forward-looking projects and programmes that balance the city's social, economic, environmental and cultural health needs.
Some of the major developments planned over the 10 year period to 2016 are highlighted to the left and below - click on the key project to find out more. |

Hamilton District Plan Review
Fast Forward is the name of Hamilton's District Plan Review and it is perhaps Council's most significant long-term project. The District Plan affects all Hamilton residents and organisations as it sets out the rules and policies for how people can develop and use land in the city.
Right now Council is seeking comment from the public on the District Plan review's first public Discussion Document. The Discussion Document is aimed at identifying the most significant resource management issues for the city which will eventually be addressed by the District Plan. It is stage one of Council's two-year review of Hamilton's District Plan, named Fast Forward. Commenting on the Discussion Document is a good opportunity for all residents and organisations to shape the direction of the new District Plan from the beginning of the process. Council would like to get the community's feedback on the issues it has identified as significant as well as any other issues Hamiltonians think are important for the city.

Managing Change and Character in Hamilton East
Submissions to the Hamilton City Council 2007/08 Annual Plan expressed concerns regarding inappropriate forms of development in terms of subdivision, building form, intensity of development, lack of design controls and the need to recognise the special character of the Hamilton East area in terms of its heritage buildings, streetscape and landscape.
