Hamilton City Council runs weekly residential kerbside collection and disposal throughout the city, which is paid for through city rates. Rubbish that gets taken to the Refuse Transfer Station is disposed of in the Horotiu landfill, 15 km north of Hamilton. The landfill receives on average 90,000 tonnes of rubbish a year.
A Hamilton bus weighs on average 9 tonnes, so this means we throw away the equivalent of 27 buses of rubbish every day!
Recycling is a good way of reducing our waste. Kerbside recycling for Hamilton households was introduced in July 2002, and since then more than 38,000 tonnes of recyclables have been collected. If everyone used kerbside recycling to its full potential, composted at home or used other available services for green waste, we could reduce the amount of rubbish going to landfill by two thirds
Plastics collected from Hamilton kerbside are sent to Transpacific Industries processing facilities in either Tauranga or Auckland. The material is sorted and baled, then exported overseas. If the material is to be exported to China, it is hogged (a form of shredding) to ensure it meets Chinese import requirements before it is sent. |
