The centre is a state-of-the-art complex and the first in New Zealand to have the two organisations situated together as a 'one stop shop'. The functions of the two operations are separate, with animal control issues undertaken by Council and animal welfare issues by the SPCA.

Seeking Submissions
Council has reviewed the Dog Control Policy and Dog Control Bylaw 2004 in accordance with the requirements of the Dog Control Act 1996 and the Local Government Act 2002. Accordingly, Council has considered what changes are necessary to the form of the bylaw.

Warm bedding wanted for the dogs
We are in need of dog bedding for winter. We would appreciate donations of woollen blankets, jerseys and polar fleece as it is difficult to get the bedding dry during the winter months. We often have up to 55 dogs at the centre that require that extra warmth during colder nights.
Any donations of unwanted dog covers would also be extremely useful.
If you can help our K9 friends out in this regard please drop the items off at the Animal Centre during opening hours (see below).
