Water is treated at the Hamilton City Council Water Treatment Station.
A $22 million upgrade of the Water Treatment Station was completed in early 2007. The city now has a state-of-the-art plant with capacity to meet the city's water demand until 2016.
The water treatment process:
- Screening - coarse grills prevent entry of large debris into the station
- Coagulation and sedimentation - raw water settles in tanks and unwanted materials sink to the bottom
- Filtration - sand filters remove any remaining materials
- Disinfection - chlorine is added to kill any remaining bacteria
- pH Correction and Fluoridation - pH is raised to normal levels to protect the pipes and fittings in the distribution network and fluoride is added.
The water is then safe for drinking and ready for distribution around the city. |
