Environmental noise monitoring

Hamilton City Council has responsibilities under the Resource Management Act to protect residential areas from the adverse effects of unreasonable noise from industrial, commercial and community & recreational land uses:

  • To prevent adjacent activities within industrial zones from being adversely effected by unreasonable noise
  • Ensure that residential development is protected from the adverse effects of excessive road noise.

The Environmental Health Unit conducts monitoring of sites at residential / industrial interface boundaries in order to build up a picture of the ambient noise environment in Hamilton city.

Eventually a noise contour map will be developed from accumulated data from the monitoring.

To achieve this, Council has recently purchased a noise monitoring system. This self-contained system can be deployed at various locations throughout the city for up to 14 days. During this time it measures the ambient noise level in the area.

The data from these measurements can be used to verify the noise levels in the noise rule of the Hamilton District Plan. The data will also eventually be used to develop a noise contour map of the city environment.
