The Committal

Following a funeral service, held at an off site venue, the family may choose to escort the casket to the crematorium for a final farewell known as a committal service. Hamilton Park Cemetery has two facilities available for this service, the Lounge and the Chapel.

In the Chapel the casket is placed on the committal table (catafalque) and at the conclusion of the service the casket may be lowered or closed from view.

In the Lounge the casket is placed on a supporting table, family make their final farewells and depart once the committal is completed. Staff collect the casket once family have left.

A complete service including the committal can be held off site and the casket can be delivered to the crematorium by the funeral director in the absence of family.

The Cremation

Once the casket arrives at the crematorium it is given a unique identifier number that will track it through our system.

At no time is the casket opened unless with the authority of and in the presence of the family or the funeral director acting on behalf of the family.

Cremation uses intense heat to reduced the body to bone ash and takes approximately one hour.

The ash is placed in a standard  urn, pictured here, supplied by Council and is securely packaged and labelled.

Ashes are held at the cemetery for a maximum of two weeks and are collected by either a family member whose name is recorded on the "Permission to Cremate" form or the funeral director acting on behalf of the family.  Photo identification is required for family members when collecting ashes from cemetery administration office.

Families may provide their own urn if they wish. If family intend to place the ashes in a plot at Hamilton Park Cemetery, please consult with a funeral director, or directly with cemetery staff, to ensure the urn will fit into the plot.

Most funeral directors will have a supply of urns to choose from or family may provide a suitable container from other sources.

If supplied in advance, the ashes of a loved one can be transferred directly into the urn by cemetery staff. Alternatively a funeral director is able to transfer the ashes from the Council supplied urn to one of your choice at a later date.
