Hamilton City Council uses innovative and proactive approaches to initiate and facilitate collective community action in order to protect and enhance the local environment and promote urban sustainability. This vision is achieved through a variety of programmes working directly with schools, householders and other members of the community by providing opportunities for learning and making change.
This involves:
- Developing creative partnerships with communities, the education sector, business, youth, Maori, planners, engineers, designers and developers.
- Engaging and supporting the different sectors of the Hamilton community to achieve positive environmental outcomes for the city.
- Incorporating the principles and concept of Agenda 21 into all of projects.
- Raising awareness about the environment.
- Initiating and taking actions that make a difference to our local environment.
- Providing leadership for sustainable living.

Eco-design advisor
Hamilton City Council has an eco-design advisor, Ian Mayes, who is available to provide free, easily accessible and independent information on a range of environmental design issues to both homeowners and designers/trades people. Ian can offer advice on a broad range of sustainable building issues, from upgrading insulation levels to options on earth building. An important message is that an "eco house" doesn't have to mean a straw bale house with chooks running through it! It can simply mean rotating your floor plan to get maximum solar gain.
Ian operates from the Building Review Department on the Ground Floor of Council. Simply phone him on 07 838 6773 or email him to make an appointment.

Sustainable Business Network
The Sustainable Business Network provides practical advice and support to assist business with this challenge. We support our members with networking opportunities, programme delivery, training and sustainability assessments.
Ecological and social issues are becoming more important than ever and consumers are calling for action. We have reached the sustainability tipping point and it is now the imperative for business this century.
Developing strategies to take on sustainability is vital for the long term survival of businesses. The drivers for business are clear - the change in thinking required and the associated challenge for business is significant.
We have the opportunity to base our economic future on principles such as quality, integrity, effectiveness and natural beauty. We could become the first country to earn a First World, sustainable living from our natural environment; through myriad small, entrepreneurial and international companies; supporting and being supported by a just, multicultural society.
SBN programmes include the Get Sustainable Challenge, GreenFleet and Sustainable Business Awards.

Ecosourced Waikato
Ecosourced Waikato was established in 2001 to encourage the growing of ecosourced native plants for the restoration of gullies in and around Hamilton, although its scope has since broadened to cover the whole of the Waikato Ecological Region.
Ecosourced Waikato runs workshops on seed collection and propagation, produces a regular email newsletter alerting plant growers to seed availability and works with schools and community groups involved in restoration projects.

Waikato Biodiversity Forum and Biodiversity Advice Waikato
The Waikato Biodiversity Forum was established in May 2002 and provides a primary link between research and management agencies, iwi groups, private landowners, communities who are interested in enhancing native biodiversity in the Waikato Region. The Forum is a non-statutory multi-lateral body that shares a common philosophy that no one agency, sector or element of society has all the answers to the biodiversity issues that now confront us both nationally and in the region.
