Environmental education or education for a sustainable future (ESF) is essential in raising people's awareness of environmental issues and in enabling them to take action to create sustainable ways to live. It is an important part of Hamilton City Council's work to ensure Hamilton grows as a sustainable city.
Council's environmental education programme includes programmes which target mainstream education, community and householders.
Children attending some Hamilton primary schools have the opportunity to participate in the Enviroschools programme. Enviroschools began its life at Hamilton City Council and is now a nationwide programme.
The 'Know it? Live it!' sustainable living programme is Council's household environmental education programme. Householders are provided with information and opportunities to participate in events around issues such as water, waste, transport and energy. The events are reviewed and community champions are celebrated through the quarterly 'Know it? Live it!' newsletter.
The 'Know it? Live it!' programme now includes the Sustainable Urban Design programme which gives residents building or retrofitting their home the opportunity to incorporate 'green building techniques' into their design and structure. |
