Public health

The HCC Environmental Health Unit team consists of environmental health officers and carries out the food safety role and general public health role.

Annual registration and inspection

There are business premises in the community, other than food premises, that have a potential to endanger the public health. These include hairdressers shops, camping grounds, funeral directors, saleyards, and offensive trades.

These businesses premises are subject to annual registration under the Health Act, and are inspected on a regular basis to ensure compliance with legislative requirements relating to each type of business premises.

Unsanitary Conditions

Conditions can exist in the community that are injurious to health (e.g insanitary swimming pool conditions), or are just plain offensive thereby causing mental distress and sometimes physical illness. In some cases these conditions may exist to such an extent that immediate action for the removal of these conditions is necessary.

Public requests for service are prioritised according to their urgency and must be investigated as soon as possible to identify, isolate, and control any nuisance conditions that may be in existence.

Infectious Diseases

Communicable disease is a very real issue in the community. Cases of communicable disease can be isolated among individuals or can be household outbreaks, while other cases can be on a large scale associated with a common source of infection. If conditions allow, uncontrolled disease can spread very quickly and affect a large number of people, resulting in a disruption of work and lifestyle.

Communicable diseases that are notifiable to the local authority are documented in the Health Act 1956. Prompt action on receiving notification of one of these communicable diseases is required to ensure that the source of infection is identified, isolated and brought under control as soon as possible, and to prevent the further spread of infection.
