Knox Street car park

Knox Street commuter car park opened in April 2006, providing an additional 442 parking spaces for Hamilton's south end within a custom-designed car parking building.

The new car park has easily-manoeuvrable parking spaces and a simple one-way system. There are no pillars to cause damage to cars. The car park includes 11 disabled car parking spaces plus 14 special parking spaces for motorcycles. Secure parking is available for up to 40 bicycles. Knox Street car park is a safe and convenient facility for commuters seeking CBD parking during the day or secure parking at night.

Patrons can enter the car park from either Knox Street or Hood Street, but exit is onto Knox Street only. Traffic can enter via Knox Street from either direction, but only west-bound traffic can enter via Hood Street.

Concurrently with the Knox Street car park opening, a new central city shuttle bus service has been launched. The shuttle bus departs from outside the new car park every 10 minutes. This free bus service is being trialled for two years in conjunction with Environment Waikato (who are responsible for managing all the bus services in Hamilton). It provides a convenient way to get around the CBD and should encourage people to leave their cars on the periphery of the CBD, helping to improve the pedestrian friendliness and accessibility of the city centre.

Car park fees and operating hours

Early-birds (in before 9am) can park for $4.50 per day (until 6.30pm), otherwise the parking fee is $1.50 per hour with a maximum of $7.50 per day. Restaurant and bar patrons can enjoy safe evening parking after 6.30pm for a maximum fee of $3.

Gates to the Knox Street car park close at 10.30pm on weekdays and 12.30am on Friday and Saturday nights. A car park ticket, however, will allow patrons to retrieve their car from the car park any time after lock-up.

Monthly access cards to Knox Street car park can be purchased from Tournament Parking for $90. An access card secures guaranteed parking in the parking building 24 hours a day, seven days a week for the valid month. There is a $10 one-off fee charged for setting up access cards, payable at the time of purchase.
