Ensuring the safety of road users is a high priority for Hamilton City Council. Our goal is to reduce the incidence and severity of crashes in Hamilton city.
Our strategy is to work with our road safety partners to develop and promote a safer road environment and foster a road safety culture. This strategy is aligned to the National Road Safety Strategy and the Government's goal to reduce road deaths to no more than 300 annually by 2010.
The outputs to achieve Hamilton's road safety goals are delivered through an annual Action Plan using a combination of the 3 'E's:
- Enforcement
- Education
- Engineering
|

|
Action Plan
The Action Plan has been compiled after analysis of crash data compiled by Land Transport NZ.
On Hamilton roads during 2004 there were:
- 3 Deaths
- 4 Serious Casualties
- 309 Minor Casualties
While this was an improvement on 2003 it is still too high.
The main issues for Hamilton cities roads and drivers are:
- Poor Observation
- Failure to Give Way
- Speed
- Restraints and Helmets.
|
|
Enforcement
Enforcement is delivered through the NZ Police. The enforcement programme is designed in partnership with Council. Police are consulted about any changes to speed limits or other restrictions that are passed by Council.
|

|
Education
The education programme is compiled and delivered to the community through the Council's road safety team.
Local Projects for 2005/06 include:
- Alcohol - 'Cab It or Cop It' drink driving education focussing on the pre-Christmas period
- Restraints - seat belts and Child restraints
- Speed - 'Kill the Speed' campaign and 'Staying Alive' event
- Intersections - 'Take Another Look at Intersections' campaign
- Community road safety initiatives
- Safer Routes to Schools - Walking School Bus Programme
- Walking School Bus Programme

Safety Projects for 2005/06 include:
- Signalised pedestrian crossings in Hukanui and Pukete Roads
