Employment development team

 

The Employment Development Team (EDT) runs a transition-to-work programme for the unemployed called 'Task Force Green' (TFG) . This programme is run in conjunction with Work and Income New Zealand, through whom referrals come.

The TFG programme is for a maximum of 25 weeks and during that time, participants learn a range of practical work skills, along with relevant NZQA approved training courses.

Task Force Green project work is carried out in three distinct areas:

  • Mobile Crews
  • Nursery Crew
  • Graffiti Crews
 

Mobile CrewsMobile crews assisting City Parks with a major planting project at the new Borman Road/Resolution Drive intersection

Two crews of up to five members each, work in a range of outdoor labouring projects throughout the city. These include assistance with a number of Council projects such as gully restoration, tree planting and plant pest removal, plus various projects for some community-based groups.

Recently the mobile crews assisted with the construction of the Te Parapara Garden project at Hamilton Gardens.  Te Mara, stage two of the traditional Maori garden development, was opened on 2nd December 2008 by Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock in the presence of Te Arikinui Tuheitia Paki, the Maori King and Honourable Anand Satyanand, the Governor-General of New Zealand.

 

Nursery Crew

A small crew of up to four TFG trainees work at the Hamilton Gardens Nursery, under the direction of the Nursery Manager.  Their work consists mainly of seed and plant propagation; potting and preparation for planting out.  This crew consists mostly of women, as the facilities are close at hand.

Graffiti Crews

         

There are three crews dedicated to removal of graffiti vandalism in Hamilton. These crews each consist of a full-time painter and two TFG trainees: Each crew covers one third of the city.

The first priority of the graffiti crews is to remove tagging from Council assets and every morning they carry out a 'milk-run' of a set list of Council property and parks.  Following that, they travel to jobs reported through the 0800 TAG BUSTERS number (0800 824 287).

0800 TAG BUSTERS is Council's free-calling number for the public to report graffiti, 24/7.

In addition to the work of the crews described above, Employment Development is providing supervision for young people sentenced to community work hours through the youth justice family group conference process. Up to two youth at any one time can be working under supervision with TFG trainees to complete their community work, ranging from eight to 120 hours.
