Designation Hamilton's Eastern Arterial

One of the key projects identified in Access Hamilton is the need to create an arterial ring road to facilitate easy movement between residential areas and employment areas. The Hamilton Eastern Arterial Project will form a component of the ring road which encompass Cobham Drive, Normandy Ave, Lorne Street, Kahikatea Drive, Greenwood Street, Lincoln Street, Avalon Drive, Wairere Drive and the proposed Hamilton Eastern Arterial Link (E1)back to Cobham Drive.

The E1 is an integral link in the completion of the ring road system and Council has now designated its alignment on the eastern side of the city. The arterial will provide a convenient limited access road for traffic to move freely north/south and to connect to east/west distributor roads in Hamilton's eastern suburbs. Pedestrian and cycle paths are provided along the length of the new road and across the road at key locations.

The notice of requirement to designate the E1 was publicly notified on 5 April and submissions were received until 8 May. Hearings of submissions were held on 14-15 August and 4 September 2006 by an independent commissioner. Council resolved on 1st November 2006 to accept the recommendations of the Commissioner which was to confirm the notice of requirement subject to a number of conditions. The Commissioner's Report is available through the link below.
