Get Enrolled

To have your say in the local council and district health board elections you must be on the electoral roll.

Who Can Enrol?

You can enrol if:

  • you are 18 years or older, and
  • are a New Zealand citizen or permanent resident, and
  • have lived in New Zealand for more than one year continuously at some time in your life.

How to Enrol

To get an enrolment form or update your details either:

  • call 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56)
  • Freetext your name and address to 36 76
  • visit any PostShop
  • visit the elections website www.elections.org.nz and enrol or update your details online.

  You must be on the electoral roll to vote

  • Enrolment update packs will be delivered between 9 and 11 July. Check your enrolment details to ensure they're up to date – only respond if any of these need changing.
  • If you need to update your details, fill in the form, then sign, date and return it by 24 August.
  • If you didn't receive an enrolment update pack you are not ready to vote. You need to enrol - it's quick and easy to do.
  • If you move house you need to update your enrolment details. If we don't have your right address you may be removed from the electoral roll.
  • Enrolment forms are available at PostShops, by calling 0800 ENROL NOW (0800 36 76 56), by freetexting your name and address to 36 76 or from the elections website www.elections.org.nz. You can also check your details and enrol online at the website.
  • The elections will be conducted by postal vote – if your details aren't up-to-date you won't get your voting papers.
  • Your vote will need to be received by your local council Electoral Officer.

Electoral rolls

Those eligible to vote at the elections are all resident electors and non-resident ratepayer electors whose names appear on the Electoral Roll when it closes. The Preliminary Electoral Roll will be available for public inspection from Friday 27 July 2007 to Friday 24 August 2007 at the following locations:

  • Electoral Office, Hamilton City Council, Level 1, Municipal Building, Garden Place, Hamilton
  • Libraries:
  • Central Library – Garden Place
  • Chartwell Branch Library – Lyndon Court
  • Dinsdale Branch Library – Whatawhata Road
  • Glenview Branch Library – MacDonald Road
  • Hillcrest Branch Library – 58 Masters Avenue
  • St Andrews Branch Library – Braid Road
  • NZ Waterworld, Garnett Avenue, Hamilton
  • Registrar of Electors, 150 London Street, Hamilton
  • Citizens Advice Bureau, 55 Victoria Street, Hamilton
  • Kirikiriroa Marae, 180 Dey Street, Hamilton
  • Waikato Migrant Resource Centre, 2 Knox Street, Hamilton
  • Resident Roll

    All parliamentary electors are automatically enrolled on the local government Resident Electoral Roll, at the address where they live. A confirmation card will be issued to all parliamentary electors during July/August 2007.

    Any alterations to the Resident Roll (eg change of addresses details, including new postal addresses) should be made by:

  • Completing the appropriate form at any Post Shop
  • Telephoning 0800 ENROLNOW (0800 367 656)
  • Accessing the Electoral Enrolment Centre website
  • Ratepayer Roll

    If a person is on the Parliamentary Roll in one area and pays rates on a property in another area, this person may be eligible to be enrolled on the non-resident Ratepayer Roll. A firm, company, corporation or society paying rates on a property, may nominate one of its members or officers as a ratepayer elector (providing the nominated person resides outside of the area).
