- It is extremely important that you familiarise yourself with the contents of the handbook. While the legislation governing the 2007 Triennial Election has not changed from the 2004 Triennial Election, the handbook provides a comprehensive explanation of the requirements of the electoral legislation.

Key aspects to the legislation governing the 2007 Triennial Election, which you need to familiarise yourself with include:
- Candidacy Qualifications – all candidates must be a New Zealand citizen on the electoral roll (see Section 6).
- Candidate profile statements with voting papers (see Section 7).
- Nominations – candidates cannot nominate themselves and are unable to use official titles and ranks with their names (see Section 7).
- Candidate deposits $200 (incl GST) (see Section 7).
- Election advertising (using any media) must identify the person under whose authority they have been produced (see Section 8).
- Candidate campaign expenditure limits (see Section 9).
- Voting period 3 weeks (see Section 12).
- Early processing of returned Voting Papers for all of the voting period (see Section 13).
- Election offences (see Section 18).
