Bailey, Gerald

I am enormously proud of what has been achieved in Hamilton since I came to the city in 1971. I have contributed to those achievements to a small extent and now seek the opportunity of contributing more directly to Hamilton's progress as a councillor.

I will bring to council this experience:

  • six years as chancellor of the University of Waikato,
  • key roles in the establishment of the Law School and the Academy of Performing Arts,
  • 30 years involvement with Northern Districts Cricket, including seven years as chairman and nine as president,
  • Key roles in successive upgradings of Seddon Park,
  • deputy chairman of Stadiums Management Board,
  • 33 years as a partner in a city law firm,
  • numerous positions of responsibility in the Anglican Church,
  • I was made a Companion of The Queen's Service Order for Public Services in 2002 and received a Civic Award for service to the city in 2005.

  • Di Maio, Joe

I'm standing for re-election to council because I'm committed to this community's future growth and development. As a parent and former small business-owner, I share many of the same concerns and aspirations as other Hamiltonians. I want Hamilton to be safe and prosperous.

I have lived in Hamilton for over 30 years, raising five children and running a successful business Gelato Arlecchino, Hamilton's first Italian pizzeria and café in Garden Place. Over the years there I served you, your children and possibly your children's children.

I believe our council has achieved a lot over the past three years by working together as a team towards common goals. With your support I hope to continue representing you on council so I can contribute towards Hamilton's growth and improvement in the future.

By voting to re-elect me you're voting for continued hard work, service, honesty and an ongoing commitment to our city.

    Gower, John

It's been a genuine privilege working for you as a city councillor over the past six years.

Re-elect me and I will continue to work hard to make a positive contribution to the city.

During this last term, Council has been one of the best, and I've enjoyed being part of a committed team.

One of my roles was as chairman of one of Council's most important committees, Statutory Management and Hearings, plus chairing several appeal authorities.

This required me to undertake legal training to deal with complex planning issues.

As a former long serving Police Community Constable, I've continued my role in helping to make the city a safer place along with dealing with graffiti and boy racer problems.

I was awarded the QSM for community service, am a Justice of the Peace, have been involved in numerous community organisations and a National Councillor for the Police Association.

    Gregory, Kay

I am very glad to say I'm a Hamiltonian. I was born here and am a proud former pupil of Fraser High School.

I've spent the past 10 years commuting to Auckland to work at TVNZ and in that time have become a strong advocate for Hamilton.

I bring fresh thinking and have the drive, commitment and time to work hard for the city.

I am a trained journalist, and a marriage and funeral celebrant. I'm involved with various charities including the Parkinson's Society and Breast Cancer Foundation and am an ambassador for Dress for Success which helps women wanting to return to the workforce.

Hamilton is a great place to live with the potential to be even better. I'm keen to work as part of a team to ensure the city grows in a manageable way and that ratepayer's money is spent wisely.

    Macpherson, Dave

Dave works hard of Hamilton's vital issues like transport, traffic, community development and city growth.

As chair of the council's Transport Committee, Dave championed successful new bus services like the Orbiter and the free CBD Shuttle, the Avalon Bypass - now under construction, the soon-to-be completed 4-laning outside The Base, the citywide cycleway network, as well as clearways and other traffic improvements designed to make access for residents and businesses more efficient and environmentally sustainable.

Dave helps produce the free Western Community News(paper), is Chair of Community Radio Hamilton Trust, coach of a Fraser High sports team and organiser of volleyball around Hamilton. He goes into bat for local community and recreational facilities because he believes in strong and healthy communities.

Dave also calls for a change in Environment Waikato councillors, and asks voters to support candidates who support the city council taking over the running of the city's buses.

    O'Leary, Angela

The decision to run for council is an easy one for me. I have the passion, time and energy to work hard when elected.

Like you, I have interests and areas of concern. Inner city safety and the promotion of Hamilton as a destination are just a couple. However when you elect me, I will listen to your problems so that your issues then become mine.

I always meet challenges honestly, commit to what is important and I am adamant that I will only promise what I know I can deliver.

I am 40 years young with an extensive background in retail management with the last seven years being self employed in the hospitality industry.

Therefore, I am offering myself as a candidate not to become a politician, but because I have the tenacity and drive to do the job.

I will make a difference. Watch me go!

    Simcock, Bob

Three years ago I campaigned under the banner "Let's Stop the Nonsense". Well, council has stopped the nonsense and done a lot more as well.

Continuing rapid growth will create many opportunities for Hamilton and its people.

We have the opportunity to build new suburbs that have been properly planned to create attractive and sustainable communities.

We can construct new commercial and industrial estates that will bring new jobs to the city.

We can continue to develop a public transport system that delivers real choices for people.

We can expand and increase our growing programme of world class events.

And we can keep on investing in our natural environment, and renew our city's heart.

As mayor and previously deputy mayor of the city its been my job to work with others both inside and outside council to generate good ideas and to make them happen. It's working.

    Lets keep going!

    Westphal, Maria (Marijke)

Re-elect me to council and I promise to continue working positively for you and the city.

Continuing rapid growth is a key issue in challenging economic times.

I'll support better urban design, 'smart' Rotokauri and Peacocke plans, sensitive redevelopment of older areas - and sustainable economic development with quality opportunities for young people.

Our environment is important - and climate change. Better transport planning and improved public transport are critical, and projects like school 'walking buses'.

I want a 'safe city' – in our streets and homes. I believe in community collaboration on social well-being issues, and making central government more accountable overall.

I'll seek greater commitment to arts and culture.

I've lived most of my life in Hamilton and bring a solid background of community and business experience. I'm a board member of Hamilton Boys' High, FUEL Festival, Katolyst, Te Araroa (Long Pathway), Sustainable Business Network, and previously MS Waikato.

    Wikiriwhi, Tim

Encouraged by friends sick of being treated like battery hens by council, I step forward for election intent on mitigation of the effects of despotism inherent in our current system of local government.

Hamilton does not need Wellington's cast off comrades but vibrant new blood who understand why the Soviet Union collapsed in misery!

Via libertarian principles endorsed by Nobel prize winner for economics, Milton Friedman, I will defend ratepayers from chardonnay socialism, property and development from tree hugging , mob envy, and peaceful fun lovers from grey haired killjoys.

I put principle ahead of popularity, justice ahead of culture and fashion, human rights and progress ahead of plants and stagnation.

I will battle to keep council out of your private affairs and focused on core infrastructure. Do you demand to be masters of your own destiny rather than chickens in a fascist coop? Vote Wikiriwhi!

    Willson, Trevor

My perspective of Hamilton and the needs of its people has been shaped by living and working within its community for 42 years. My diverse experience includes 20 years in business, serving several years as a paramedic, currently working in the disability industry and a volunteer sports administrator and committee member for the NZ Ethnic Soccer Festival. I am one who actively seeks to get involved. Hamilton must provide for the needs and enjoyment of all sectors of the community and requires a well rounded mix of councillors to ensure it grows and progresses with balance whilst continuing to attract major events and meeting its responsibilities to the citizens.

Following in the footsteps of other family who have served, one as a Hamilton city councillor and another one of New Zealand's longest serving mayors, standing for council in New Zealand's best city is for me a natural desire and progression.
