What is 'Summer in Garden Place' all about?

It’s all on in Garden Place. All through this summer an exciting range of activities is planned for the CityHeart. Summer in Garden Place is all about creating a space for people to meet, enjoy activities and share time together.

Watch out for the schedule of activities including entertainment from Hamilton street theatre group Free Lunch, free Saturday classic movie screenings and weekend jam sessions for talented young musicians. There will even be workshops for aspiring stilt walkers.

Hamilton’s new i-SITE is open for business and the Hamilton Central Library will spill outside for people to enjoy book readings and other activities.

You will notice some small changes – like the petanque court near the Victoria Street entrance. There are also tables and chairs which can be used free of charge during the day to enjoy the open spaces and summer sun.

And let’s not forget the popular giant Hamilton Community Christmas Tree, which will again capture some festival cheer in the centre of the city.

“Summer in Garden Place” this week:

“Council is taking a fresh approach to Garden Place, which is very much about what happens there, not about cobblestones and physical design.”

Hamilton Mayor Bob Simcock

Hamilton City Libraries has selected some fascinating old photographs of Garden Place over the last century. The images show the leveling of Garden Place in the 1930s, the construction of the Central Post Office (now SkyCity Casino), huge gatherings of people for the Queen’s Coronation in the 1950s, the giant car park of the 1960s, fountains of the 1970s, and the construction and opening of the central library in the early 1990s.  The photographs can be viewed on the Summer in Garden Place Facebook page.
