A School Travel Plan encourages children and the school community to think about how they get to school, weaving some exercise into their journey and avoiding traffic congestion around the school area.
To help our local schools build safe, sustainable and healthy journeys to school, Hamilton City Council’s Sustainable Travel Facilitators can help your school establish a School Travel Plan.
The focus is on establishing “Safer Routes to School” programmes and increasing the proportion of families who use alternative means of transport to get to school, such as walking, cycling, carpooling or taking the bus. Resources are available to help the school and community i.e. a workbook, step-by-step guide, survey for staff students and parents and information and advice. Support is available for your school through the process of creating the plan as you follow the step-by-step guide, assess your issues, and develop working solutions. |

Other Sustainable travel options include:
- Park and Walk is a safe, healthy and environmentally friendly option for families who live a considerable distance from school. Students travel part of the way by vehicle and are dropped off at a safe and pre-arranged place where they can meet with others to walk the remainder ofthe journey to school. This can be organised to link in with a supervised walking school bus. This option works really well at the end of the school day when students are met by parents who have walked part of the way and this actively eases congestion at the school gate, making it safer for everyone.

Issues addressed by School Travel Planning
The process of School Travel Planning makes available access to advice, support and cool activities that support every school's goal to be actively enagaged in School Travel plans. At Council, the Sustainable Travel Facilitators advocate on your behalf and help possible for your school to get the necessary things they need in order to make it safer for students to walk to and from school. The School Travel Plan also works parallel to the Neighbourhood Access programme - which identifies travel behaviour within the community and seeks to maintain and/or improve the current accessibility infrastructure. |
Congestion outside schools
The peak influx of traffic around schools of dropping off, picking up and manoeuvring around the school gates can cause havoc, minimise visibility and the potential for accidents is considerably increased. |
Illegal Parking
When a car is parked illegally it can inconvenience and be a safety issue for other users of the road. especially if the car is parked in a cycle lane or bus stop.

Access Points
Making the school journey as safe as possible is the primary objective of school travel plans. When access points are in need of a tidy up or could cause injury due to it's physical state, School Travel Plans can help correct those access points.

Kea Crossings
Kea Crossings are staffed before and after schools by teachers and trained patrollers. This provides a safe and obvious means to cross busy roads for children. When the stop signs are out, traffic must stop.

Cycle Skills Training
Cycle skills training can be arranged for schools participating in the School Travel Plan programme.
Graffiti
On visible (to roads) walls, access ways and school buildings a graffiti removal service is available to all schools involved in the School Travel Plan programme.
